The details

At a glance: Canon RF-S 55-210mm IS STM - consumer tele-zoom for RF APS-C, stabilised, 88-336mm equivalent.

About this lens

The Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM is Canon's consumer tele-zoom for RF APS-C mirrorless (R7, R10, R50). Covers 88-336mm full-frame equivalent - useful reach for wildlife, sports and distant subjects. IS-stabilised, lightweight, affordable.

Build & handling

Sensor coverage APS-C
Autofocus STM (stepping motor) - silent
Image stabilisation Yes - up to 4 stops (or more with IBIS bodies - N/A for current RF-S bodies which don't have IBIS)
Minimum focus distance 0.73m (wide) / 1.0m (tele)
Filter thread 55mm
Weight 270g
Construction PMo aspherical + UD glass, plastic mount

Works with

  • Canon RF APS-C mirrorless (R7, R10, R50) - native fit
  • Canon RF full-frame mirrorless - APS-C crop mode only
  • Not compatible with other mounts

Best for

A consumer tele-zoom for Canon's RF APS-C bodies - pairs with the 18-45 or 18-150mm kit for full zoom range coverage. Reaches 336mm equivalent at the long end for sports and wildlife. The f/7.1 at the tele end is a trade-off for size and cost; AF works fine in good light but may slow in dim conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Does this lens have image stabilisation?

Yes - up to 4 stops.

Why is the aperture so slow at the long end?

f/7.1 at 210mm keeps the lens notably smaller, lighter and more affordable than a brighter pro tele-zoom. AF is fine in good light; in dim conditions some photographers prefer a faster aperture.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
