At a glance: A rotating variable ND filter for 55mm lens threads, covering roughly 1 to 8.6 stops, for motion blur and wide apertures in bright light.

About this accessory

This 55mm variable ND from Urth covers ND2 to ND400, or roughly 1 to 8.6 stops, on a single rotating ring. Japanese AGC optical glass and a multi-layer coating sit in a slim aluminium frame made for 55mm lens threads.

It is useful for slowing shutter speeds to blur water or movement, or for keeping a wide aperture in bright sun. Urth advises against using it on very wide-angle or telephoto lenses, so it suits standard focal lengths best.

Works with

  • Lenses with a 55mm filter thread

Best for

A flexible choice for landscape photographers, travel shooters and videographers working in bright daylight who want to dial in motion blur or shoot wide open. At 55mm this is a mid-small thread, so confirm the ø mark on your lens.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the right filter for a 55mm lens thread?

Any lens with a 55mm front thread will take it. Look for the diameter symbol (ø) followed by a number on the front of the lens barrel or inside the lens cap. If it reads 55, this filter screws straight on.

How strong is the Urth ND2-400 filter?

Each stop halves the light. At its lightest setting (ND2) it cuts one stop, and at its darkest (ND400) about 8.6 stops, so you can lengthen a shutter speed several hundred times over.

Does this ND work on any lens?

Urth advises against using this filter on very wide-angle or telephoto lenses. It is best used on lenses of standard focal lengths.

Is a variable ND better than fixed ND filters?

A variable ND is quicker to adjust and covers a range of strengths in one filter. Fixed filters, like Urth's ND kits, give set strengths of 3, 6 or 10 stops and are a choice if you prefer no adjustment.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
