Best for
A versatile single-lens solution for wildlife, aviation and safari - the 80-400mm range covers far more ground than a fixed telephoto. This D-series version predates Nikon's later AF-S 80-400mm and focuses by screw drive, which is noticeably slower and noisier; it suits considered wildlife and landscape work more than fast-moving sport. Works on FX and DX bodies, giving 120-600mm equivalent on DX.
Frequently asked questions
Will it autofocus on my D3500 or D5600?
No. This is a screw-drive AF-D lens with no motor of its own, so it needs a body that has an in-body AF motor. On a D3xxx or D5xxx it will mount and meter but focus manually only. The later AF-S 80-400mm has its own motor and does not have this limitation.
How good is the VR on this older lens?
It was Nikon's first-generation VR, so roughly two stops of benefit rather than the three to four of modern designs - still a worthwhile help at 400mm handheld, but do not expect current performance.
Will it autofocus on entry-level Nikon DSLRs (D3xxx / D5xxx)?
No. This lens uses screw-drive autofocus and requires a Nikon body with an in-body AF motor (D7xxx, D8xx or pro bodies, or older film SLRs). On entry-level bodies it can be used in manual focus only.
