Bought almost entirely for reach - 2000mm equivalent brings distant birds, aircraft, wildlife and even the moon within range of a camera you can carry in one hand. The small sensor means image quality does not match an interchangeable-lens camera, and at full zoom you need good light and a steady stance. Nothing with interchangeable lenses gets close to this reach for the money.

Is 2000mm really usable?

In good light and with the stabilisation on, yes - it is remarkable for casual wildlife, aircraft and lunar photography. Expect softness and visible noise at the extreme end, and use a monopod or brace against something solid where you can. Nikon's own zoom-out button helps you re-find a subject you lose at full zoom.

How does it compare to the P1000?

The P1000 extends to 125x (3000mm equivalent) and adds 4K video, in a larger and heavier body. The P900 is more compact and usually significantly cheaper used, with the same small-sensor image-quality characteristics.
