About this lens
The Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM is a compact stabilised wide-standard prime for EF-mount DSLRs, released in 2012. It was one of the first Canon primes at this focal length to include image stabilisation, which is unusual on a wide lens and makes a real difference for handheld low-light and video work. Ring-type USM gives fast, quiet, full-time manual-override autofocus.

A genuinely versatile reportage and travel prime - wide enough for environmental context, fast enough for available light, and small enough to carry all day. The stabilisation is the differentiator over the older 35mm f/2: four stops of correction makes handheld shooting in dim interiors realistic, and it steadies handheld video noticeably. On an APS-C body it becomes a natural 56mm-equivalent standard lens.
Frequently asked questions
Is stabilisation useful on a 35mm lens?
Yes, more than many expect. It does not freeze subject motion, but it lets you handhold at much slower shutter speeds - valuable indoors, at dusk and for handheld video, where a wide lens is often used precisely because light is short.
Will it work on a Canon RF mirrorless body?
Yes, via Canon's EF-EOS R adapter, with full autofocus, stabilisation and aperture control retained.
