At a glance: Urth's 82mm ND2-400 variable ND filter adjusts by turning the ring, and the manufacturer advises against very wide or telephoto lenses.

About this accessory

The Urth 82mm Variable ND Filter changes density as you turn its ring, from about 1 stop (ND2) to 8.6 stops (ND400). It uses Japanese AGC optical glass with a multi-layer nano-coating in an ultra-slim aluminium frame, and screws onto a 82mm lens thread.

One filter gives you repeatable control: turn the ring to set the strength, then read the result on screen. Urth does not recommend it for wide-angle or telephoto lenses, which is worth knowing before you buy.

Best for

Suited to long exposures of water and skies, and portraits at wide apertures in strong sun, using lenses of normal focal length. 82mm is a large thread, so confirm the ø mark on your lens before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Will the 82mm Variable ND Filter fit my lens?

It fits any lens with a 82mm filter thread, whatever the make or mount. Look for the diameter symbol (ø) followed by a number on the front of the lens barrel or inside the lens cap. If it reads 82, this filter screws straight on.

How strong is the Urth ND2-400 filter?

Each stop halves the light. At its lightest setting (ND2) it cuts one stop, and at its darkest (ND400) about 8.6 stops, so you can lengthen a shutter speed several hundred times over.

Does this ND work on any lens?

Urth advises against using this filter on very wide-angle or telephoto lenses. It is best used on lenses of standard focal lengths.

Is a variable ND better than fixed ND filters?

A variable ND is quicker to adjust and covers a range of strengths in one filter. Fixed filters, like Urth's ND kits, give set strengths of 3, 6 or 10 stops and are a choice if you prefer no adjustment.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
