At a glance: A light 1/8 Black Mist diffusion filter for 82mm lens threads, with SCHOTT B270 glass, for a subtle filmic bloom around highlights.

About this accessory

For lenses with a 82mm thread, the Urth Ethereal Black Mist 1/8 adds a subtle glow around bright points. The glass is SCHOTT B270, coated with 20 layers of CoraNano, and the frame is warp-resistant aluminium.

At 1/8 strength the effect is gentle: highlights bloom softly, digital sharpness is tamed and colour accuracy stays intact. Urth also makes a stronger 1/4, and a 1/1 as its strongest, if you want more glow.

Frequently asked questions

What lenses take the 82mm Black Mist 1/8 Filter?

Any lens with a 82mm front thread will take it. Your lens will have its filter thread printed on the barrel or cap, shown as ø followed by millimetres. 82mm means this one fits without any adapters.

What is a Black Mist 1/8 filter for?

A Black Mist filter is a diffusion filter that blooms highlights and lowers contrast slightly. Urth lists this one in its Ethereal range at 1/8, the lightest strength, for a subtle filmic look.

Should I choose 1/8 or 1/4 Black Mist?

The numbers show strength: 1/8 is light, 1/4 is medium with noticeable halation around highlights, and 1/1 is the strongest in Urth's Ethereal range. Stronger filters give more glow and lower contrast.

Is Ethereal the same as Black Mist?

Yes, they are the same filter. Urth's full product name is Ethereal Black Mist, and we use Black Mist in the title because that is the name photographers and filmmakers search for.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
