At a glance: Urth's 82mm circular polariser removes reflections from non-metallic surfaces and boosts contrast, with a slim aluminium frame and lifetime warranty.

About this accessory

This 82mm CPL from Urth cuts glare and surface reflections from water, glass and foliage. The glass is Japanese AGC optical glass with a multi-layer nano-coating, and the slim frame is warp-resistant to limit vignetting.

Rotating the ring changes the effect, and it is most noticeable when the camera points across the sun rather than towards or away from it. Being circular, it works with autofocus and metering on modern cameras. Expect to lose some light, so slower shutter speeds follow.

Works with

  • Lenses with a 82mm filter thread

Best for

Useful for anyone photographing water, glass or foliage, and for travellers wanting richer skies. A 82mm thread belongs to a larger lens, so check yours first. Check the ø mark on your lens to confirm the 82mm thread first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a 82mm filter fits my lens?

It suits lenses with a 82mm filter thread, regardless of brand. Look for the diameter symbol (ø) followed by a number on the front of the lens barrel or inside the lens cap. If it reads 82, this filter screws straight on.

How do I get the best effect from a CPL?

Screw it on, then rotate the front ring while looking through the viewfinder or at the screen until reflections fade or the sky deepens. The effect is strongest at roughly 90 degrees to the sun.

How much light does a polariser lose?

A polariser absorbs some light, so expect a slower shutter speed or higher ISO. Cameras with through-the-lens metering will usually adjust for you.

Can I use the 82mm size on smaller lenses?

Yes. A step-up ring from the smaller lens thread to 82mm lets you share one larger filter across several lenses, which is often cheaper than buying one filter per lens. Wide-angle lenses may show vignetting with a ring fitted.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
