At a glance: Urth's 72mm ND2-400 variable ND filter adjusts by turning the ring, and the manufacturer advises against very wide or telephoto lenses.

About this accessory

This 72mm variable ND from Urth covers ND2 to ND400, or roughly 1 to 8.6 stops, on a single rotating ring. Japanese AGC optical glass and a multi-layer coating sit in a slim aluminium frame made for 72mm lens threads.

Choose a variable ND over a fixed set when you want to adjust quickly, such as when light changes during a shoot or while filming. The manufacturer's note is that very wide and telephoto lenses are not recommended.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a 72mm filter fits my lens?

It fits lenses with a 72mm front filter thread. The thread size is printed on the lens, usually as ø72 on the front rim or on the inside of the lens cap. The number is the filter thread, not the focal length.

What does 1 to 8.6 stops mean?

Each stop halves the light. At its lightest setting (ND2) it cuts one stop, and at its darkest (ND400) about 8.6 stops, so you can lengthen a shutter speed several hundred times over.

Can I use a variable ND on a wide-angle or telephoto lens?

Urth advises against using this filter on very wide-angle or telephoto lenses. It is best used on lenses of standard focal lengths.

Can I use the 72mm size on smaller lenses?

Yes. A step-up ring from the smaller lens thread to 72mm lets you share one larger filter across several lenses, which is often cheaper than buying one filter per lens. Wide-angle lenses may show vignetting with a ring fitted.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
