At a glance: Urth's Plus+ Black Mist 1/8 in 72mm is the gentlest strength in the Ethereal range, lowering contrast slightly while keeping colour accurate.

About this accessory

The Urth 72mm Ethereal Black Mist 1/8 Filter Plus+ is a diffusion filter that blooms highlights gently. It uses German SCHOTT B270 glass with a CoraNano 20-layer coating on both sides in an ultra-slim, warp-resistant aluminium frame for 72mm lens threads.

It takes the edge off modern digital sharpness without hiding detail. It is the lightest of the Ethereal strengths, so it suits shooters trying diffusion for the first time. Heavier options are 1/4 and 1/1.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a 72mm filter fits my lens?

It fits any lens with a 72mm filter thread, whatever the make or mount. Look for the diameter symbol (ø) followed by a number on the front of the lens barrel or inside the lens cap. If it reads 72, this filter screws straight on.

What is a Black Mist 1/8 filter for?

A Black Mist filter is a diffusion filter that blooms highlights and lowers contrast slightly. Urth lists this one in its Ethereal range at 1/8, the lightest strength, for a subtle filmic look.

Should I choose 1/8 or 1/4 Black Mist?

The numbers show strength: 1/8 is light, 1/4 is medium with noticeable halation around highlights, and 1/1 is the strongest in Urth's Ethereal range. Stronger filters give more glow and lower contrast.

Is Ethereal the same as Black Mist?

Yes, they are the same filter. Urth's full product name is Ethereal Black Mist, and we use Black Mist in the title because that is the name photographers and filmmakers search for.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
