At a glance: A rotating variable ND filter for 58mm lens threads, covering roughly 1 to 8.6 stops, for motion blur and wide apertures in bright light.

About this accessory

This 58mm variable ND from Urth covers ND2 to ND400, or roughly 1 to 8.6 stops, on a single rotating ring. Japanese AGC optical glass and a multi-layer coating sit in a slim aluminium frame made for 58mm lens threads.

One filter gives you repeatable control: turn the ring to set the strength, then read the result on screen. Urth does not recommend it for wide-angle or telephoto lenses, which is worth knowing before you buy.

Works with

  • Lenses with a 58mm filter thread

Best for

Best for silky waterfalls and rivers, moving clouds and crowds, and for video shooters keeping a 180-degree shutter in bright light. It suits standard-length lenses with a 58mm thread. Check the ø mark on your lens to confirm the 58mm thread first.

Frequently asked questions

Will the 58mm Variable ND Filter fit my lens?

It suits lenses with a 58mm filter thread, regardless of brand. Check the ø figure marked on the front of your lens or on its cap. A lens marked ø58 takes this filter directly, and the lens manual lists the thread size too.

What does 1 to 8.6 stops mean?

Each stop halves the light. At its lightest setting (ND2) it cuts one stop, and at its darkest (ND400) about 8.6 stops, so you can lengthen a shutter speed several hundred times over.

Can I use a variable ND on a wide-angle or telephoto lens?

Urth advises against using this filter on very wide-angle or telephoto lenses. It is best used on lenses of standard focal lengths.

Can one 58mm filter be shared between lenses?

Yes. Step-up rings let a 58mm filter fit lenses with smaller threads, so one filter can cover several lenses. Watch for vignetting with wide-angle lenses when a ring is fitted.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
