At a glance: Urth's 58mm circular polariser removes reflections from non-metallic surfaces and boosts contrast, with a slim aluminium frame and lifetime warranty.

About this accessory

This 58mm CPL from Urth cuts glare and surface reflections from water, glass and foliage. The glass is Japanese AGC optical glass with a multi-layer nano-coating, and the slim frame is warp-resistant to limit vignetting.

It suits shooters who want a polariser without paying for the higher tiers. Because it is circular, autofocus and metering work normally, and some exposure compensation through shutter or ISO is needed as it absorbs light. Plus+ and Pro are the upgrades.

Best for

A practical first polariser for hillwalkers and outdoor photographers who want deeper colour and less glare. It works on still and moving subjects. Check your lens for a 58mm thread before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a 58mm filter fits my lens?

It fits lenses with a 58mm front filter thread. Look for the diameter symbol (ø) followed by a number on the front of the lens barrel or inside the lens cap. If it reads 58, this filter screws straight on.

How do I get the best effect from a CPL?

Screw it on, then rotate the front ring while looking through the viewfinder or at the screen until reflections fade or the sky deepens. The effect is strongest at roughly 90 degrees to the sun.

How much light does a polariser lose?

A polariser absorbs some light, so expect a slower shutter speed or higher ISO. Cameras with through-the-lens metering will usually adjust for you.

Can one 58mm filter be shared between lenses?

Yes. Step-up rings let a 58mm filter fit lenses with smaller threads, so one filter can cover several lenses. Watch for vignetting with wide-angle lenses when a ring is fitted.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
