At a glance: The Urth 49mm Circular Polariser cuts glare and reflections from water, glass and foliage, and deepens colour, on lenses with a 49mm thread.

About this accessory

For 49mm lens threads, this Urth polariser deepens colour and lifts contrast in landscapes and architecture. Japanese AGC glass keeps tones natural, and the frame is designed to avoid vignetting.

Use it to cut the sheen off wet leaves, water and glass, or to darken a blue sky. It takes some light, so expect to open up or slow down. Standard is the entry tier, and Plus+ and Pro bring SCHOTT B270 glass and denser coatings.

Best for

Useful for anyone photographing water, glass or foliage, and for travellers wanting richer skies. Check your lens for a 49mm thread before ordering. Check the ø mark on your lens to confirm the 49mm thread first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a 49mm filter fits my lens?

It fits any lens with a 49mm filter thread, whatever the make or mount. Look for the diameter symbol (ø) followed by a number on the front of the lens barrel or inside the lens cap. If it reads 49, this filter screws straight on.

How do I use a circular polariser?

Fit it to the lens and turn the outer ring until you see the glare drop. It works best when the camera is pointing across the sun, not directly into or away from it.

Does a circular polariser need exposure compensation?

A polariser absorbs some light, so expect a slower shutter speed or higher ISO. Cameras with through-the-lens metering will usually adjust for you.

What is the difference between circular and linear polarisers?

Circular polarisers are designed to work with autofocus and metering systems on modern digital cameras, which is why this one is the usual choice. Linear types can confuse some camera systems.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
