At a glance: Urth's 46mm ND2-400 variable ND filter adjusts by turning the ring, and the manufacturer advises against very wide or telephoto lenses.

About this accessory

The Urth 46mm Variable ND Filter changes density as you turn its ring, from about 1 stop (ND2) to 8.6 stops (ND400). It uses Japanese AGC optical glass with a multi-layer nano-coating in an ultra-slim aluminium frame, and screws onto a 46mm lens thread.

It is useful for slowing shutter speeds to blur water or movement, or for keeping a wide aperture in bright sun. Urth advises against using it on very wide-angle or telephoto lenses, so it suits standard focal lengths best.

Frequently asked questions

Will the 46mm Variable ND Filter fit my lens?

It fits lenses with a 46mm front filter thread. Check the ø figure marked on the front of your lens or on its cap. A lens marked ø46 takes this filter directly, and the lens manual lists the thread size too.

What does 1 to 8.6 stops mean?

Each stop halves the light. At its lightest setting (ND2) it cuts one stop, and at its darkest (ND400) about 8.6 stops, so you can lengthen a shutter speed several hundred times over.

Can I use a variable ND on a wide-angle or telephoto lens?

Urth advises against using this filter on very wide-angle or telephoto lenses. It is best used on lenses of standard focal lengths.

Can I use a 46mm filter on a lens with a smaller thread?

Yes, with a step-up ring from your lens's thread size to 46mm. It lets one filter serve more than one lens, though a ring adds a little length and can cause vignetting on wide-angle lenses.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
