At a glance: Urth's 46mm circular polariser removes reflections from non-metallic surfaces and boosts contrast, with a slim aluminium frame and lifetime warranty.

About this accessory

This 46mm CPL from Urth cuts glare and surface reflections from water, glass and foliage. The glass is Japanese AGC optical glass with a multi-layer nano-coating, and the slim frame is warp-resistant to limit vignetting.

You turn the front ring until reflections fade or the sky darkens, and the effect is strongest at roughly 90 degrees to the sun. A polariser reduces light reaching the sensor, so expect a slower shutter speed or higher ISO. Plus+ moves to SCHOTT B270 glass with a 20-layer coating.

Best for

Best for landscape, waterside and architecture photography with a 46mm lens: lakes, rivers, shop windows, damp woodland and blue skies over the Dales. It helps most in bright, clear daylight.

Frequently asked questions

What lenses take the 46mm Circular Polariser?

It fits lenses with a 46mm front filter thread. The thread size is printed on the lens, usually as ø46 on the front rim or on the inside of the lens cap. The number is the filter thread, not the focal length.

How do I get the best effect from a CPL?

Screw it on, then rotate the front ring while looking through the viewfinder or at the screen until reflections fade or the sky deepens. The effect is strongest at roughly 90 degrees to the sun.

How much light does a polariser lose?

A polariser absorbs some light, so expect a slower shutter speed or higher ISO. Cameras with through-the-lens metering will usually adjust for you.

Can I use a 46mm filter on a lens with a smaller thread?

Yes, with a step-up ring from your lens's thread size to 46mm. It lets one filter serve more than one lens, though a ring adds a little length and can cause vignetting on wide-angle lenses.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
