At a glance: Urth's entry UV filter in 40.5mm: clear AGC glass, an ultra-slim aluminium frame and a lifetime warranty, for lenses with a 40.5mm thread.

About this accessory

This 40.5mm UV filter sits at the Standard tier of the Urth range. Japanese AGC optical glass is paired with a multi-layer nano-coating, listed by Urth as 8 layers, inside a thin threaded aluminium ring made for a 40.5mm lens thread.

Choose it when you want simple everyday protection from dust, fingerprints and scratches without paying for a higher tier. Being a clear filter, it needs no exposure compensation. Plus+ steps up to SCHOTT B270 glass with a 30-layer coating, and Pro to tempered AERO-C10 glass.

Best for

Suited to photographers who leave a filter on all the time. It is handy for dusty trails, seaside spray, crowded events and handing a camera to someone else, anywhere the front glass is at risk. A 40.5mm thread is a small one, so check the ø mark on your lens to be sure.

Frequently asked questions

Will the 40.5mm UV Filter fit my lens?

It fits any lens with a 40.5mm filter thread, whatever the make or mount. The thread size is printed on the lens, usually as ø40.5 on the front rim or on the inside of the lens cap. The number is the filter thread, not the focal length.

Is a UV filter worth fitting to a modern lens?

Not for image quality, as digital sensors are far less sensitive to UV than film. Most people fit a clear UV filter as a cheap, replaceable guard against scratches, dust and fingerprints on the front element.

Do I need to adjust exposure with this filter?

No exposure compensation is needed. It is a clear filter, so your normal metering and settings carry on as before.

How does the Standard tier differ from Plus+ and Pro?

Standard uses Japanese AGC optical glass with a multi-layer coating. Plus+ moves to SCHOTT B270 glass with a 30-layer dual-side coating, and Pro uses tempered AERO-C10 glass with a 34-layer coating.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
