At a glance: The Urth 40.5mm Ethereal Black Mist 1/8 filter adds a light highlight glow and softens digital sharpness on lenses with a 40.5mm thread.

About this accessory

The Urth 40.5mm Ethereal Black Mist 1/8 Filter Plus+ is a diffusion filter that blooms highlights gently. It uses German SCHOTT B270 glass with a CoraNano 20-layer coating on both sides in an ultra-slim, warp-resistant aluminium frame for 40.5mm lens threads.

Pick 1/8 if you want a hint of softness that is easy to live with, such as on skin or bright windows. If you want a more obvious look, the Ethereal 1/4 is the next step up.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a 40.5mm filter fits my lens?

It fits lenses with a 40.5mm front filter thread. Check the ø figure marked on the front of your lens or on its cap. A lens marked ø40.5 takes this filter directly, and the lens manual lists the thread size too.

What does a Black Mist filter do?

A Black Mist filter is a diffusion filter that blooms highlights and lowers contrast slightly. Urth lists this one in its Ethereal range at 1/8, the lightest strength, for a subtle filmic look.

What is the difference between 1/8, 1/4 and 1/1 Black Mist?

The numbers show strength: 1/8 is light, 1/4 is medium with noticeable halation around highlights, and 1/1 is the strongest in Urth's Ethereal range. Stronger filters give more glow and lower contrast.

Does a 40.5mm filter work on a small or compact lens?

Yes, 40.5mm is a small thread of the kind found on compact lenses and small primes, and the slim frame adds very little length. Check the ø mark on your lens first.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
