At a glance: A Standard-tier circular polariser for 40.5mm lens threads, with Japanese AGC glass and a multi-layer coating, for deeper skies and less surface glare.

About this accessory

Urth's Standard CPL in 40.5mm is a circular polarising filter made with Japanese AGC glass. A multi-layer coating helps clarity, and the ultra-slim aluminium ring carries a lifetime warranty.

You turn the front ring until reflections fade or the sky darkens, and the effect is strongest at roughly 90 degrees to the sun. A polariser reduces light reaching the sensor, so expect a slower shutter speed or higher ISO. Plus+ moves to SCHOTT B270 glass with a 20-layer coating.

Best for

Best for landscape, waterside and architecture photography with a 40.5mm lens: lakes, rivers, shop windows, damp woodland and blue skies over the Dales. It helps most in bright, clear daylight.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the right filter for a 40.5mm lens thread?

Any lens with a 40.5mm front thread will take it. Look for the diameter symbol (ø) followed by a number on the front of the lens barrel or inside the lens cap. If it reads 40.5, this filter screws straight on.

How do I use a circular polariser?

Fit it to the lens and turn the outer ring until you see the glare drop. It works best when the camera is pointing across the sun, not directly into or away from it.

Does a circular polariser need exposure compensation?

A polariser absorbs some light, so expect a slower shutter speed or higher ISO. Cameras with through-the-lens metering will usually adjust for you.

What is the difference between circular and linear polarisers?

Circular polarisers are designed to work with autofocus and metering systems on modern digital cameras, which is why this one is the usual choice. Linear types can confuse some camera systems.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
