Best for
A well-regarded enthusiast DSLR of its era - 16MP sensor is still useable for stills, vari-angle screen was a notable step up for Nikon, and the image quality was class-leading in 2011 thanks to the Sony sensor. Important caveat: no in-body AF motor - only AF-S, AF-P and AF-I lenses autofocus. AF/AF-D screw-drive lenses only manual focus on the D5100.
Frequently asked questions
Will my old AF screw-drive Nikon lens autofocus on the D5100?
No. The D5100 has no built-in body AF motor. Only AF-S, AF-P and AF-I lenses (those with built-in focus motors) will autofocus. Older AF and AF-D lenses mount and meter correctly but you'll have to focus manually.
