How we grade used kit

Every used camera, lens and pair of binoculars is checked and tested in our Harrogate shop before it's listed. The grade tells you how it looks. Every graded item works properly.

The grades

  • Like new

    Little or no sign of use. Could pass for new. Optics and sensor clean.

    Shop like new kit

  • Excellent

    Light signs of careful use, only visible up close. Optics and sensor clean, or minor internal dust that doesn't affect pictures, noted in our notes.

    Shop excellent kit

  • Very good

    Some light marks or wear from normal use. Nothing that affects how it works or its pictures.

    Shop very good kit

  • Good

    Clearly used, with visible wear such as scuffs, paint wear or light scratches on the body. Works properly and takes good pictures.

    Shop good kit

  • Fair

    Heavy signs of use, or a flaw described in our notes, such as haze or marks on the glass. Fully working, priced to match.

    Shop fair kit

  • Spares or repair

    Not graded

    Not fully working. The fault is described in our notes, and it's priced for someone who can fix it or use it for parts.

The rules we grade by

  • Every graded item is fully working and tested in our Harrogate shop.
  • Haze, fungus, separation or scratches on the glass mean Fair at most, and the flaw is always written in our notes.
  • Minor internal dust that doesn't affect pictures means Excellent at most, and we say so.
  • "Light signs of use" is Excellent, not Like new. We'd rather you were pleasantly surprised.
  • If the photos aren't of the actual item, ask and we'll send you photos of the one you'd be buying.
  • If a listing shows our notes but no grade, ask us and we'll tell you more about it.

The grade, with what it means in a line.
Our notes
What the person who tested it noticed: marks, dust, anything worth knowing.
Warranty
Set for each item, up to 12 months. The length is on the listing.
In the box
Exactly what comes with it: caps, hood, strap, charger, box.
