The details

At a glance: Canon FD 24mm f/2.8 - compact manual-focus wide-angle prime for Canon FD film bodies.

About this lens

The Canon FD 24mm f/2.8 is a manual-focus wide-angle prime from Canon's pre-autofocus FD system. It gives a genuinely wide view on 35mm film with the compact size and solid metal construction typical of the era, and has become popular again as an adapted lens on mirrorless cameras.

Build & handling

Maximum aperture f/2.8
Focusing Manual, with a marked distance and depth-of-field scale
Filter thread 55mm
Construction Metal barrel

Works with

  • Canon FD film bodies: AE-1, A-1, F-1, AV-1 and similar
  • Sony E, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds and Canon RF mirrorless via an FD adapter
  • 55mm filters
  • NOT usable on Canon EF DSLRs without an optical adapter, which degrades quality

Best for

24mm is the classic reportage and landscape wide angle - wide enough to take in a room or a sweeping view without the obvious distortion of an ultra-wide. On FD film bodies it is used as intended; on mirrorless cameras it adapts easily because the FD flange distance is short, and the depth-of-field scale makes zone focusing straightforward.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this on a modern Canon DSLR?

Not satisfactorily. The FD mount is a different design, and adapters for EF bodies need corrective glass which reduces image quality. It adapts very well to mirrorless cameras instead.

Is it fully manual?

Yes - focus and aperture are set by hand on the lens. On a mirrorless body you would shoot in aperture priority or manual and focus with magnification or focus peaking.

How wide is 24mm in practice?

On a 35mm film camera or a full-frame digital body it is a strong wide angle, good for landscapes and interiors. On an APS-C camera it behaves more like a 36mm lens, closer to a standard view.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
