About this camera

Released in 2021, the Ricoh GR IIIx is a shirt-pocket APS-C compact built around a fixed 26.1mm f/2.8 lens that delivers a 40mm-equivalent field of view. It pairs a 24.2MP APS-C sensor with in-body 3-axis Shake Reduction, and is the tighter-framing sibling to the 28mm-equivalent GR III.

Works with

  • Fixed lens - not interchangeable
  • Optional GA-2 lens adapter (adds 49mm filter thread and enables the tele conversion lens)
  • Optional GT-2 tele conversion lens (approx 75mm equivalent, requires GA-2)
  • Optional GV-3 external optical viewfinder (40mm framelines)

Best for

The GR IIIx is aimed at street and everyday-carry photographers who want large-sensor image quality in something that genuinely fits a pocket. The fixed 40mm-equivalent lens frames a little tighter than the classic 28mm GR, suiting portraits, details and a more considered, standard-lens way of seeing, though it cannot be swapped for a different focal length. There is no built-in electronic viewfinder, so composition relies on the rear touchscreen, and video tops out at Full HD 1080p with no 4K, keeping the camera squarely focused on stills.

Frequently asked questions

How is the GR IIIx different from the GR III?

The GR IIIx has a 26.1mm f/2.8 lens giving a 40mm-equivalent field of view, whereas the GR III uses a wider 18.3mm lens for a 28mm-equivalent view. The sensor, body and most other specifications are otherwise the same.

Does the GR IIIx have a built-in viewfinder?

No. There is no built-in viewfinder, so you compose on the 3-inch rear touchscreen. An optional GV-3 optical viewfinder can be added via the hotshoe.

Can it shoot 4K video?

No. Video is limited to Full HD 1080p at up to 60p; the GR IIIx is designed primarily as a stills camera.

Can I change or zoom the lens?

No. The 40mm-equivalent lens is fixed and prime. A GT-2 tele conversion lens (with the GA-2 adapter) can extend reach to roughly 75mm equivalent.
