The details
At a glance: Opticron ES80 GA ED with SDL zoom - 80mm ED spotting scope, waterproof, approx. 20-60x.
About this spotting scope
The Opticron ES80 GA ED is an 80mm ED spotting scope - the larger of Opticron's mid-range field scopes, with extra-low-dispersion glass to control colour fringing and a rubber-armoured, nitrogen-filled body. Supplied here with the SDL zoom eyepiece, Opticron's wide-range zoom which gives roughly 20-60x on this body in a single eyepiece.

Works with
- Opticron eyepieces with the same fitting
- Tripods with a standard 1/4in screw - a fluid video head is recommended
- Opticron digiscoping adapters for phones and cameras
- Stay-on cases sized for the ES80
Best for
An 80mm objective is the usual choice for serious birdwatching: bright enough to keep working at dusk and at high magnification, while still portable enough for a day in a hide or on a reserve. The ED glass matters most at the top of the zoom range, where non-ED scopes show colour fringing on high-contrast edges. The rotating collar lets you switch between eye-level and awkward angles without re-levelling the tripod.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a tripod?
Yes. At 20x and above, handheld viewing is not practical - a tripod with a fluid head is part of the kit, not an optional extra.
What does ED glass actually do?
Extra-low-dispersion glass brings the different colours of light to a common focus, which removes the purple or green fringing you see on bright edges - most noticeable at high magnification.
Can I take photographs through it?
Yes, this is called digiscoping. With an Opticron phone or camera adapter you can photograph through the eyepiece, which gives enormous reach for distant birds.
Why buy from Bass & Bligh
Bought from a real shop, not a warehouse.
Dispatched on the Monday… great service

George P.Ordered a lens onlineA proper little treasure trove
3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
Philip B.Third visit to the shopBrilliant advice with awesome customer service
Sure you can buy online and possibly save a few pounds.. but if you require and appreciate knowledge and brilliant advice with awesome customer service then it's a no brainer...This is a real camera shop like it used to be back int day..
