Why is the Trip 35 so celebrated?

How does zone focus work?
Rather than precise manual focus, you select one of four distance zones (close-up, portrait, group, infinity) indicated by symbols or distance ranges on the lens barrel. At f/2.8 with a 40mm lens, depth of field is forgiving enough that zone focus works well for most everyday subjects.
