About this camera

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II was Olympus's 2016 professional Micro Four Thirds flagship and the camera that established the system's credentials for action photography. A 20.4MP Live MOS sensor, 121 all cross-type phase-detect points and a genuinely fast mechanical shutter combined with class-leading 5-axis stabilisation to make a small, sealed body capable of professional work.

Best for

A capable professional body for wildlife, sport and travel where size and weight matter - the Micro Four Thirds 2x crop turns a 300mm lens into a 600mm-equivalent in a package a full-frame system cannot match. The in-body stabilisation is the standout feature, making handheld work practical at shutter speeds that would be impossible on most systems. Now superseded by the Mark III and the OM System OM-1, which makes it strong value used.

Frequently asked questions

How does it compare to the Mark III and the OM-1?

The Mark III refined autofocus and added computational features on the same sensor. The OM System OM-1 is a bigger step - a stacked sensor, far better autofocus and much improved high-ISO performance. The Mark II remains a very capable body and is the most affordable of the three used.

What is Sync IS?

When paired with a stabilised PRO lens such as the 12-100mm f/4 or 300mm f/4, the lens and body stabilisation work together, raising correction from 5.5 to around 6.5 stops. With unstabilised lenses you still get the full 5-axis in-body correction.
