The details
At a glance: Nikon Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR - retractable 75-375mm-equivalent telephoto zoom with stabilisation.
About this lens
The Nikon Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR is the telephoto zoom for Nikon's APS-C mirrorless bodies, covering a 75-375mm equivalent range. It uses a retracting design, so it collapses to a compact size for carrying, and has built-in vibration reduction - useful at the long end where camera shake is most visible. Stepping-motor autofocus is quiet enough for video.
Build & handling
| Maximum aperture | f/4.5-6.3, variable |
|---|---|
| Stabilisation | Built-in VR, approx. 5 stops |
| Focusing | Stepping motor - quiet, smooth for video |
| Minimum focus | Approx. 0.5m at the wide end |
| Filter thread | 62mm |
| Design | Retractable - must be extended to shoot |
Works with
- Nikon Z DX bodies: Z50, Z50 II, Z fc, Z30
- Works on full-frame Z bodies in DX crop mode
- 62mm filters
- Nikon HB-90A hood
Best for
This is the second lens most Z50, Z fc and Z30 owners buy - it covers wildlife, sport and anything too far away for the kit zoom, at a weight and price far below a professional telephoto. The variable aperture means less light at 250mm, so it is happiest in good light or on a body that handles higher ISO well.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the lens need extending before use?
It retracts for carrying. Turning the zoom ring past the lock position extends it ready to shoot - the camera will prompt you if you try to shoot while it is retracted.
Can I use it on a full-frame Z body?
Yes, but the camera will switch to DX crop mode and use a smaller part of the sensor, so you get a reduced pixel count.
Is f/6.3 at the long end a problem?
In daylight, no. Indoors or at dusk you will need a higher ISO or a slower shutter speed - the built-in VR helps with the latter, though it cannot freeze a moving subject.
Why buy from Bass & Bligh
Bought from a real shop, not a warehouse.
Dispatched on the Monday… great service

George P.Ordered a lens onlineA proper little treasure trove
3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
Philip B.Third visit to the shopBrilliant advice with awesome customer service
Sure you can buy online and possibly save a few pounds.. but if you require and appreciate knowledge and brilliant advice with awesome customer service then it's a no brainer...This is a real camera shop like it used to be back int day..
