The details

At a glance: Nikon FM2n with Ai 50mm f/1.4 - all-mechanical 35mm SLR, 1/4000 shutter, works without a battery.

About this camera

The Nikon FM2n is the definitive mechanical 35mm SLR - every shutter speed works without a battery, the titanium-bladed shutter runs to 1/4000 and flash syncs at 1/250. The battery powers only the light meter. Paired here with the Ai 50mm f/1.4, a fast standard prime that suits low light and shallow-depth-of-field work.

Build & handling

Format 35mm film
Type All-mechanical SLR
Shutter 1/4000 to 1 second plus B, works without a battery
Flash sync 1/250
Metering Centre-weighted, LED display; needs battery
Battery Two LR44 / SR44 cells - meter only
Lens included Ai 50mm f/1.4 standard prime

Works with

  • Nikon Ai and Ai-S manual-focus lenses (full metering)
  • Most AF-D lenses will mount and work in manual focus with an aperture ring
  • 52mm filters on the 50mm f/1.4
  • Nikon MD-12 motor drive

Best for

The FM2n is the camera people recommend for learning film or for working somewhere cold, remote or hard on equipment, precisely because it does not depend on a battery to fire. The 1/4000 shutter and 1/250 flash sync were exceptional for a mechanical camera and are still useful today - they allow fast lenses wide open in daylight and fill-flash in bright sun.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work without a battery?

Yes, entirely. All shutter speeds are mechanical. The two small cells run the light meter only, so a dead battery costs you metering, not the camera.

Which lenses can I use?

Nikon Ai and Ai-S manual-focus lenses are the natural fit and meter correctly. Later AF lenses with an aperture ring will mount and work manually. G-type lenses without an aperture ring are not usable.

Is it a good first film camera?

It is one of the best. Everything is manual and mechanical, so the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and exposure is visible, and there is very little that can fail electronically.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
