The details

At a glance: Nikon D7100 body - 24.1MP DX DSLR with 51-point AF and no low-pass filter.

About this camera

The Nikon D7100 is Nikon's enthusiast DX-format DSLR - a 24.1MP APS-C sensor with no optical low-pass filter for maximum detail, EXPEED 3 processing and the 51-point Multi-CAM 3500DX autofocus module borrowed from higher-end Nikon bodies. Body only.

Build & handling

Type APS-C (DX) digital SLR
Sensor 24.1 megapixel DX CMOS, no optical low-pass filter
Processor EXPEED 3
Autofocus 51-point Multi-CAM 3500DX, 15 cross-type
Viewfinder Optical pentaprism, approx. 100% coverage
Burst rate 6fps
Video 1080p Full HD
Body Magnesium alloy top and rear, weather-sealed

Works with

  • Nikon F-mount AF-S, AF-P and AF-D lenses (in-body AF motor drives screw-drive lenses)
  • Nikon EN-EL15 battery
  • Dual SD card slots
  • Nikon Speedlight flashes with i-TTL

Best for

A capable enthusiast DSLR that remains excellent value used - the 51-point AF system and pentaprism viewfinder are a clear step up from Nikon's entry-level bodies, and omitting the low-pass filter gives noticeably crisp files. Has an in-body autofocus motor, so it drives older screw-drive AF and AF-D lenses as well as AF-S - a real advantage when buying used glass.

Frequently asked questions

Will it autofocus with older screw-drive Nikon lenses?

Yes. The D7100 has an in-body AF motor, so AF and AF-D lenses without their own motor will autofocus normally. Nikon's entry-level bodies such as the D3xxx and D5xxx series will not, which makes the D7100 a much better match for used F-mount glass.

What does no low-pass filter mean in practice?

Slightly crisper, more detailed images, at a small increase in the risk of moire patterning on finely repeating textures such as fabric. For most subjects it is a straightforward gain in sharpness.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
