About this camera
The Nikon D610 is a 2013 full-frame FX DSLR built around a 24.3MP sensor, and Nikon's most affordable route into full frame at launch. It was a targeted revision of the D600, fitted with a new shutter mechanism that resolved the sensor-contamination complaints of its predecessor, while also adding a quiet continuous drive mode and slightly faster shooting.

Best for
An excellent value entry into full-frame Nikon - 24MP is ample for large prints, the dual card slots are a real advantage for anyone shooting paid work, and the sensor's dynamic range remains highly regarded for landscape use. Well suited to portraits, landscape, weddings and general photography. Note it uses the older screw-drive-compatible F mount, so it will autofocus with older AF-D lenses as well as modern AF-S ones.
Frequently asked questions
How is the D610 different from the D600?
Principally the shutter mechanism. The D600 drew complaints about oil and debris appearing on the sensor; the D610 fitted a redesigned shutter that resolved it, and added a 3fps quiet continuous mode and a marginally faster 6fps burst.
Will it autofocus with older Nikon lenses?
Yes. Unlike Nikon's entry-level DSLRs, the D610 has a built-in focus motor, so screw-drive AF and AF-D lenses autofocus normally as well as modern AF-S types.
Can I use DX lenses on it?
Yes, but the camera crops automatically to the DX image circle, giving roughly 10MP files rather than the full 24MP. FX lenses are the natural match.
