About this lens
The Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G is a fast short-telephoto prime, widely regarded as an excellent value portrait lens. Released in 2012 as the AF-S update to Nikon's long-running 85mm f/1.8 line, with a Silent Wave motor and rounded 7-blade aperture.

Best for
A classic portrait focal length on full-frame, giving flattering compression, clean subject separation and a gentle out-of-focus background. Also strong for events, street and general short-telephoto work. On DX bodies it becomes a 127mm equivalent.

Yes. The built-in AF-S silent-wave motor handles autofocus in-lens, so this works on every Nikon F-mount DSLR including entry-level bodies.
Is this a good portrait lens?
Yes. 85mm on full-frame is a classic portrait focal length; f/1.8 gives clean subject isolation, and the rounded 7-blade aperture keeps out-of-focus highlights smooth.
