The details
At a glance: Nikon AF 85mm f/1.8 - fast screw-drive portrait prime for Nikon F-mount, FX coverage.
About this lens
The Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 is the classic screw-drive autofocus portrait prime - fast, light and sharp, with a focal length that flatters faces and separates the subject from the background. Autofocus is driven by a motor in the camera body rather than the lens, which keeps it compact and simple but means it focuses manually on bodies without a focus motor.
Build & handling
| Maximum aperture | f/1.8 |
|---|---|
| Autofocus | Screw-drive from the camera body (no motor in the lens) |
| Aperture ring | Yes |
| Filter thread | 62mm |
| Format | Full frame (FX) - also works on DX as approx. 128mm equivalent |
Works with
- Nikon DSLRs with a built-in focus motor for autofocus: D7x00, D500, D6x0, D7x0, D8x0, D3, D4, D5 series
- Mounts on D3x00 and D5x00 bodies but focuses MANUALLY only
- 62mm filters
- Works on Nikon Z bodies via the FTZ adapter - manual focus only
Best for
85mm at f/1.8 is the standard portrait combination: enough working distance to avoid distorting features, and enough background blur to isolate the subject. This screw-drive version is significantly cheaper used than the later AF-S G lens, and optically very close. The compromise is body compatibility, because the focus motor lives in the camera.
Frequently asked questions
Will it autofocus on my camera?
Only if your body has a built-in focus motor. Enthusiast and professional Nikon DSLRs do; entry-level bodies such as the D3400 and D5600 do not, and with those the lens works as a manual-focus lens.
How does it compare with the newer AF-S 85mm f/1.8G?
Optically they are close. The G version focuses on any Nikon DSLR because the motor is in the lens, and is quieter. This AF version is usually considerably cheaper second-hand.
Does it work on a Z-series mirrorless camera?
With the FTZ adapter it mounts and meters, but the adapter has no focus screw, so focusing is manual.
Will it autofocus on entry-level Nikon DSLRs (D3xxx / D5xxx)?
No. This lens uses screw-drive autofocus and requires a Nikon body with an in-body AF motor (D7xxx, D8xx or pro bodies, or older film SLRs). On entry-level bodies it can be used in manual focus only.
Why buy from Bass & Bligh
Bought from a real shop, not a warehouse.

George P.Ordered a lens onlineA proper little treasure trove
3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
Philip B.Third visit to the shopBrilliant advice with awesome customer service
Sure you can buy online and possibly save a few pounds.. but if you require and appreciate knowledge and brilliant advice with awesome customer service then it's a no brainer...This is a real camera shop like it used to be back int day..
