The details

At a glance: Konica Hexar AF in silver - premium 35mm compact with a fast fixed 35mm f/2 lens and Silent Mode.

About this camera

The Konica Hexar (Hexar AF) is a 1990s premium autofocus 35mm compact built around a fixed 35mm f/2 lens - an unusually fast and highly regarded optic for a camera of this class, often compared with Leica's 35mm Summicron. Its other signature feature is Silent Mode, which slows the film transport and lens movements so the camera is near-inaudible, making it a favourite for candid and street photography.

Build & handling

Format 35mm film
Lens 35mm f/2 (fixed)
Focusing Passive autofocus with focus lock; manual distance setting available
Shutter Leaf shutter in lens
Exposure Program AE and aperture priority with exposure compensation
Special mode Silent Mode - quietened transport and focus
Battery 2CR5 lithium
Finish Silver

Works with

  • 2CR5 lithium battery
  • 46mm filters
  • Standard 35mm film, colour or black and white

Best for

The Hexar AF sits between a point-and-shoot and a rangefinder: automatic enough to carry everywhere, but with a lens and metering good enough for serious work. The f/2 aperture is a stop or two faster than most fixed-lens compacts of the era, which is what makes it usable indoors and after dark on 400-speed film.

Frequently asked questions

How quiet is Silent Mode really?

Very - it slows the autofocus and film wind so that in a quiet room the camera is barely noticeable. It is the reason the Hexar developed its reputation among street and documentary photographers.

Is the lens as good as people claim?

It is widely rated as one of the best fixed lenses fitted to an autofocus compact - sharp wide open with pleasant out-of-focus rendering. Comparisons with Leica 35mm lenses are common, though the Hexar is an autofocus camera rather than a rangefinder.

Can I focus it manually?

Yes - the camera allows a distance to be set manually, which is useful for pre-focused street shooting or when autofocus struggles through glass.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
