The Kite APC 16x42 is an image-stabilised binocular from Belgian optics maker Kite Optics. Electronic stabilisation counteracts hand tremor, which is what makes 16x magnification genuinely usable handheld - at that power an unstabilised binocular is normally unwatchable without a tripod. The result is high-magnification detail with the freedom of handheld observation.

For anyone who has wanted more magnification than a conventional 8x or 10x binocular but found higher powers impossible to hold steady, stabilisation is the answer - it makes 16x detail available without a tripod. Particularly valuable for distant waders and seabirds, raptor watching, marine use from a moving boat, and casual astronomy. Note that stabilised binoculars require batteries to deliver their main benefit.
Frequently asked questions
Why does 16x need stabilisation?
Magnification amplifies hand tremor just as much as it amplifies detail. At 8x most people can hold a steady enough image; by 16x natural hand movement makes the view difficult to use. Electronic stabilisation cancels that movement, so the magnification becomes usable without a tripod.
Does it still work if the batteries run out?
You can still look through it as a conventional binocular, but without stabilisation a 16x view is very difficult to hold steady. Carrying spare batteries is strongly advised.
How does 16x42 compare to a standard 8x42?
You see twice the detail at a given distance, but with a narrower field of view and a dimmer image, since the same 42mm objective spreads light over a more magnified view. It complements rather than replaces a general-purpose 8x42.
