The details

At a glance: Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 STM - autofocus portrait prime for Fujifilm X, about 128mm equivalent.

About this lens

The Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 STM is an autofocus portrait prime for Fujifilm X-mount. On an APS-C Fujifilm body it gives roughly a 128mm-equivalent field of view with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture, for tight head-and-shoulders portraits with a soft, out-of-focus background.

Build & handling

Maximum aperture f/1.8
Autofocus STM stepping motor, works with the camera's face and eye detection

Works with

  • Fujifilm X-mount bodies: X-T, X-S, X-E, X-H and X-Pro series
  • Firmware can be updated through the lens's USB port

Best for

Viltrox made its name with affordable autofocus primes for mirrorless systems, and the 85mm f/1.8 is one of its most popular. It costs a fraction of Fujifilm's own fast telephoto primes while still focusing automatically, which is why it is a common first portrait lens for X-mount shooters.

Frequently asked questions

Does it autofocus on Fujifilm cameras?

Yes. It is a full autofocus lens with electronic contacts, and it works with the camera's face and eye detection. Aperture is set from the camera or the lens as normal.

Is 85mm too long on a crop-sensor Fujifilm?

It behaves like a 128mm lens, which is tight for full-length portraits indoors but ideal for head-and-shoulders shots and candid portraits from a distance. For a classic 85mm-style view on Fujifilm, a 50-56mm lens is the closer match.

The listing mentions minor internal dust. Does that affect pictures?

A little dust inside a lens is normal with use and does not show in photographs. The condition notes above say the optics are clear of major defects.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
