At a glance: RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM - compact, stabilised standard zoom with 0.5x close-focus at the wide end.

About this lens

The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM is Canon's compact, affordable RF-mount standard zoom, released in 2020 as the kit lens for the EOS RP. Covers a useful 24-105mm range with image stabilisation and Canon's STM focus motor for smooth, near-silent autofocus.

Build & handling

Autofocus STM (stepping motor)
Image stabilisation Yes - up to 5 stops (7 stops combined with IBIS bodies)
Minimum focus distance 0.13m (close end)
Filter thread 67mm
Weight 395g
Construction Plastic mount, retractable design

Works with

  • Canon RF-mount full-frame mirrorless (R, RP, R3, R5, R6, R8 and later)
  • Canon RF-mount APS-C mirrorless (R7, R10, R50) - acts as ~38-168mm equivalent
  • Not compatible with Canon EF-mount DSLRs (DSLRs cannot accept RF lenses)

Best for

A compact, light RF standard zoom with genuinely useful 0.5x maximum magnification (close-focus macro territory) at the wide end. The variable f/4-7.1 aperture is unusual - a trade-off for keeping the lens small and light. Paired with Canon's IBIS-equipped R-series bodies, combined IS reaches up to 7 stops.

Frequently asked questions

Will it work on a Canon EF DSLR (5D, 6D, 7D)?

No. RF lenses cannot be mounted on EF DSLRs - the mount is physically different and there is no reverse adapter. This lens is RF mirrorless only.

Does this lens have image stabilisation?

Yes - up to 5 stops alone, or up to 7 stops combined with bodies that have IBIS (R5, R6, R6 II).

Why is the aperture so slow at the long end?

The f/4-7.1 aperture is unusual for a modern 24-105mm. It's a trade-off that keeps this lens notably smaller, lighter and more affordable than the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS - Canon's pro-grade RF standard zoom.
