At a glance: 32.5MP APS-C mirrorless with 1.6x crop reach, IBIS and 30fps bursts - Canon's wildlife and sports specialist.
About this camera
The Canon EOS R7 is Canon's flagship APS-C mirrorless body, released in 2022 as the first RF-mount camera built for wildlife and sports shooters. Its 32.5-megapixel sensor, 1.6x crop factor and up to 30fps burst give telephoto lenses extra reach and fast subjects to spare, backed by in-body stabilisation and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II subject tracking.

Works with
- Canon RF-mount lenses - both full-frame RF and APS-C RF-S
- Canon EF and EF-S DSLR lenses via the EF-EOS R mount adapter (full AF and stabilisation)
- 1.6x crop factor applies to every lens (RF-S/EF-S cover the sensor; full-frame lenses are cropped)
- Not compatible with EF-M lenses from Canon's older APS-C mirrorless system
Best for
Aimed at wildlife, birding and sports enthusiasts, the R7 turns the RF system's telephoto lenses into effective long reach: the 1.6x crop factor makes a 100-500mm lens frame like roughly 160-800mm in full-frame terms, and 15-30fps bursts with deep subject-tracking AF help lock onto fast, erratic movement. It doubles happily as a travel and video body too. Note that native APS-C glass is limited to Canon's small RF-S range, but any full-frame RF lens mounts directly, and EF/EF-S DSLR lenses work fully via Canon's EF-EOS R adapter.
Frequently asked questions
What is the crop factor?
The R7 has a 1.6x crop factor. Multiply a lens's focal length by 1.6 for its full-frame-equivalent field of view - so a 400mm lens frames like a 640mm, which is why it suits wildlife and sports.
Can it use my Canon EF and EF-S DSLR lenses?
Yes. With Canon's EF-EOS R adapter, both EF and EF-S lenses work with full autofocus and stabilisation. Canon's older EF-M mirrorless lenses are not compatible.
Does it have in-body stabilisation?
Yes - 5-axis IBIS rated up to 7 stops, rising to up to 8 stops when paired with a compatible optically stabilised RF lens (coordinated control).
Is it a good camera for wildlife and sports?
That is its speciality. The 1.6x crop extends telephoto reach, and it shoots up to 30fps with subject-detection autofocus for animals, people and vehicles.
