The details

At a glance: Canon EOS 50D - 15.1MP enthusiast APS-C DSLR, magnesium body, 6.3fps, CompactFlash.

About this camera

The Canon EOS 50D is a mid-range APS-C DSLR from the enthusiast line that sat between the consumer Rebel bodies and the professional 1D series. It has a 15.1MP sensor, a magnesium-alloy body with a degree of environmental resistance, a top-plate information display and the quick control dial on the back that marks out Canon's enthusiast bodies.

Build & handling

Sensor 15.1MP APS-C CMOS

Viewfinder Optical pentaprism, approx. 95% coverage
Screen 3.0in VGA LCD with live view
Body Magnesium alloy with some sealing
Storage CompactFlash (CF) card
Battery Canon BP-511A

Works with

  • All Canon EF and EF-S lenses
  • CompactFlash (CF) cards
  • Canon BP-511A battery
  • Canon Speedlite flashguns with E-TTL II

Best for

The 50D is a capable, inexpensive route into Canon DSLR photography with a body that feels far more substantial than an entry-level camera - twin control dials, a top LCD and fast continuous shooting. Note that it takes CompactFlash cards rather than SD, which are still available but less common than they once were.

Frequently asked questions

Does it take SD cards?

No - the 50D uses CompactFlash. CF cards and readers are still sold, but check you have one before buying, as they are no longer the common standard.

Can I use modern Canon RF lenses?

No. RF lenses are for Canon's mirrorless bodies. The 50D takes EF and EF-S lenses, of which there is a very large and inexpensive second-hand supply.

Is 15MP enough today?

For prints up to A3 and all screen use, yes. The bigger practical differences against a modern camera are high-ISO performance and autofocus in live view.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
