About this lens
The Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM is Canon's stabilised L-series short telephoto portrait prime, released in 2017. It was the first 85mm f/1.4 from any major manufacturer to include image stabilisation, positioning it between the compact 85mm f/1.8 and the extreme 85mm f/1.2L - retaining most of the subject separation while being far more practical to focus and carry.

The classic portrait focal length executed with modern optics - f/1.4 gives strong subject-background separation and the rendering 85mm is prized for, while the stabilisation and weather sealing make it viable for events and weddings rather than studio work alone. Faster and more reliable to focus than the 85mm f/1.2L, and a substantial step up in build and optics from the 85mm f/1.8.
Frequently asked questions
How does it compare to the 85mm f/1.2L?
The f/1.2L gives marginally more subject separation and a distinctive rendering, but focuses slowly and is heavy. The f/1.4L IS focuses far faster, adds four stops of stabilisation and weather sealing, and is the more practical choice for working photographers.
Is it good for weddings and events?
It is one of the strongest choices for that work - the weather sealing, fast USM autofocus and stabilisation address exactly the constraints of shooting events in variable light and conditions.
