At a glance: Cheap, sharp 50mm f/1.8 standard prime with quiet STM autofocus and a metal mount, for Canon EF-mount DSLRs.

About this lens

Released in 2015, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is the updated 'nifty fifty' - an affordable standard prime that pairs a bright f/1.8 aperture with sharp results and a quiet STM stepping motor for smooth autofocus. It replaced the older 50mm f/1.8 II, adding a metal mount, a 7-blade circular aperture and a closer 0.35m focusing distance.

Works with

  • Canon EF-mount full-frame DSLRs
  • Canon EF-mount APS-C DSLRs (about 80mm equivalent)
  • Canon RF-mount mirrorless via EF-EOS R adapter
  • Canon EF-M mirrorless via EF-EOS M adapter

Best for

This is a natural first prime: light, inexpensive and easy to carry, with an f/1.8 aperture that gathers plenty of light for low-light shooting and produces soft background blur for portraits. On a full-frame body it gives a classic standard field of view close to how the eye sees; on an APS-C Canon DSLR the 1.6x crop makes it behave like roughly an 80mm short telephoto, which is flattering for head-and-shoulders portraits.

Frequently asked questions

What field of view does it give on an APS-C Canon body?

The 1.6x crop factor makes it behave like about an 80mm lens, giving a tighter, portrait-friendly angle of view rather than the standard view it gives on full-frame.

Can I use it on a Canon RF mirrorless camera?

Yes. With Canon's EF-EOS R mount adapter it works on RF-mount EOS R bodies with full autofocus and metering.

Is the STM autofocus good for video?

The STM stepping motor focuses quietly and smoothly, which suits Movie Servo AF and continuous focus, though it is not the fastest for fast action stills.

How does it differ from the older 50mm f/1.8 II?

It adds a metal mount, a 7-blade circular aperture for rounder background blur, an STM motor with full-time manual focus and a slightly closer 0.35m minimum focus distance.

Will it work on Canon RF mirrorless bodies?

Yes, via the Canon EF-EOS R adapter. Autofocus and IS are preserved, and the lens functions normally on R, R5, R6, R7, R8, R50 and other RF bodies.
