At a glance: Original push-pull Canon L-series super-telephoto zoom - full-frame EF, 2-stop IS, ring USM.

About this lens

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM is the original L-series super-telephoto zoom released in 1998. Distinguished by its push-pull zoom mechanism, it was the long-lens workhorse for a generation of Canon wildlife and sports photographers before being superseded by the Mark II in 2014.

Build & handling

Image stabilisation Yes - up to 2 stops
Autofocus Ring USM
Zoom mechanism Push-pull with friction adjustment
Minimum focus distance 1.8m
Filter thread 77mm
Weight 1380g
Construction L-series weather-sealed

Works with

  • Canon EF-mount full-frame DSLRs (5D series, 6D, 1D series)
  • Canon EF-mount APS-C DSLRs (acts as ~160-640mm equivalent)
  • Canon RF mirrorless via EF-EOS R adapter

Best for

Still a highly capable wildlife and sports lens on a budget. The push-pull zoom is divisive - fast to deploy once mastered but prone to dust ingress. Compatible with all Canon EF-mount full-frame and APS-C DSLRs, and with Canon RF-mount mirrorless via the EF-EOS R adapter.

Frequently asked questions

Should I get this or the Mark II?

The Mark II (2014 onward) replaced the push-pull zoom with a traditional rotating ring, improved IS (4 stops vs 2), and added a fluorite element. The original is cheaper and very capable, but more prone to dust ingress via the push-pull mechanism.

Does this lens have image stabilisation?

Yes — up to 2 stops.

Will it work on Canon RF mirrorless bodies?

Yes, via the Canon EF-EOS R adapter. Autofocus and IS are preserved, and the lens functions normally on R, R5, R6, R7, R8, R50 and other RF bodies.
