The details

At a glance: Panasonic Lumix GX80 + 12-32mm - 16MP rangefinder-styled MFT camera with 5-axis Dual IS and 4K, pocketable kit.

About this camera

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX80 is a 2016 rangefinder-styled Micro Four Thirds body - sold as the GX85 in North America - built around a 16MP sensor with the anti-aliasing filter removed for extra detail. It was the first Lumix to pair in-body stabilisation with in-lens OIS as Dual IS, and it introduced an electromagnetic shutter mechanism that markedly reduced shutter shock. Supplied here with the 12-32mm pancake kit zoom.

Build & handling

Sensor 16MP Live MOS, Micro Four Thirds, no anti-aliasing filter
Stabilisation 5-axis in-body, combining with OIS lenses as Dual IS
Viewfinder 2.76M-dot equivalent field-sequential EVF, tilt-free rangefinder placement
Screen 3in tilting touchscreen
Continuous shooting 8fps single-AF, 6fps continuous-AF
Video 4K/30p, plus 4K Photo modes (8MP stills pulled from 4K footage)
Shutter Electromagnetic drive - substantially reduced shutter shock
Lens supplied Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH MEGA OIS (24-64mm equivalent)
Weight Approx. 426g with battery and card

Works with

  • All Micro Four Thirds lenses - Panasonic, Olympus and OM System
  • Dual IS works with Panasonic OIS lenses; in-body IS stabilises any lens
  • DMW-BLG10 battery
  • SD, SDHC and SDXC cards

Best for

A genuinely pocketable interchangeable-lens camera - with the 12-32mm pancake mounted the whole package slips into a coat pocket, which makes it a strong travel and street choice. Removing the anti-aliasing filter gives crisper detail than the sensor's 16MP suggests, and Dual IS makes handheld shooting in poor light practical. 4K Photo is genuinely useful for pulling a sharp frame out of fast action.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same camera as the GX85?

Yes. Panasonic sold it as the GX80 in Europe, the GX85 in North America and the GX7 Mark II in Japan - the same camera under regional names.

What is Dual IS?

In-body 5-axis stabilisation working together with optical stabilisation in a compatible Panasonic OIS lens, giving better correction than either alone. With non-OIS lenses you still get the full in-body stabilisation.

What does removing the anti-aliasing filter do?

It lets the sensor resolve finer detail, at a small theoretical risk of moire on tightly repeating patterns like fine fabric. In practice the extra sharpness is the more noticeable effect.

  • A proper little treasure trove

3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
