The details
At a glance: Tamron SP 24-70 f/2.8 Di VC USD (original) - pro standard zoom for Nikon FX, weather-sealed with VC.
About this lens
The Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD (first generation) is Tamron's original full-frame professional standard zoom, released in 2012. A significant lens at launch - the first 24-70 f/2.8 zoom from any manufacturer with built-in stabilisation - and it remains a capable working zoom for Nikon FX DSLRs.
Build & handling
| Autofocus | USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) |
|---|---|
| Image stabilisation | Yes - Tamron VC, approximately 4 stops |
| Minimum focus distance | 0.38m |
| Filter thread | 82mm |
| Weight | 825g |
| Construction | LD + XR glass, aspherical elements, weather-sealed |
Works with
- Nikon F-mount full-frame DSLRs (D750, D780, D810, D850, D6 and older)
- Nikon F-mount APS-C DSLRs (acts as ~36-105mm equivalent)
- Nikon Z mirrorless via FTZ/FTZ II adapter - AF and VC preserved
Best for
A widely-used pro-grade standard zoom for Nikon FX - constant f/2.8 with VC stabilisation, useful for weddings, events, portraits and general work. The first-gen version predates the G2 (2017) but still delivers strong optical performance at a typically more affordable used price.
Frequently asked questions
How does this compare to the G2 version?
The G2 (2017) refines optical performance (especially at corners), improves VC to 5 stops, updates coatings, and adds fluorine front-element coating. The original (this lens) remains optically strong and is typically more affordable.
Will it autofocus on entry-level Nikon DSLRs (D3xxx / D5xxx)?
Yes. The built-in USD motor handles autofocus in-lens.
Does this lens have image stabilisation?
Yes — Tamron VC, approximately 4 stops.
Why buy from Bass & Bligh
Bought from a real shop, not a warehouse.
Dispatched on the Monday… great service

George P.Ordered a lens onlineA proper little treasure trove
3rd time I've been to this shop to treat myself to some new kit. Always very friendly and knowledgeable. Fairly priced too. I would highly recommend a visit if your nearby and looking for camera gear. I'd say if they don't have what your looking for, it's probably not possible to find anywhere. It's a proper little treasure trove.
Philip B.Third visit to the shopBrilliant advice with awesome customer service
Sure you can buy online and possibly save a few pounds.. but if you require and appreciate knowledge and brilliant advice with awesome customer service then it's a no brainer...This is a real camera shop like it used to be back int day..
