At a glance: Olympus MC-14 - weather-sealed 1.4x teleconverter for Olympus PRO telephoto lenses, 1-stop loss.

About this lens

The Olympus MC-14 is a 1.4x teleconverter for the Micro Four Thirds PRO telephoto lenses, adding 40% to focal length at a cost of one stop of light. It retains autofocus, stabilisation and full electronic communication, and carries the same weather sealing as the PRO lenses it attaches to.

Build & handling

Magnification 1.4x focal length
Light loss 1 stop (an f/2.8 lens becomes f/4)
Optical construction 6 elements in 3 groups
Autofocus Retained, with full electronic communication
Stabilisation Lens and body stabilisation retained
Weather resistance Yes - dust, splash and freeze-proof to -10°C
Weight 105g

Works with

  • M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO
  • M.Zuiko ED 300mm f/4 IS PRO
  • M.Zuiko ED 150-400mm f/4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO
  • M.Zuiko ED 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 IS (with firmware support)
  • Not compatible with standard zooms such as the 12-100mm f/4 PRO

Best for

The teleconverter to leave permanently in the bag - only one stop of light for a useful gain in reach, turning the 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO into a 112-420mm-equivalent f/4 and the 300mm f/4 into an 840mm equivalent. The single-stop penalty means it stays usable in the overcast conditions wildlife photography often involves, where the MC-20 would be marginal.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit any Micro Four Thirds lens?

No. It mounts only on the supported PRO telephoto lenses. The protruding front element physically prevents mounting on other lenses, which protects their rear elements.

How much image quality do I lose?

Very little on the supported PRO lenses - they were designed with the converters in mind. Expect a marginal reduction in contrast and corner sharpness, generally outweighed by the extra reach when you need it.
