A capable enthusiast DSLR that remains excellent value used - the 51-point AF system and pentaprism viewfinder are a clear step up from Nikon's entry-level bodies, and omitting the low-pass filter gives noticeably crisp files. Has an in-body autofocus motor, so it drives older screw-drive AF and AF-D lenses as well as AF-S - a real advantage when buying used glass.

Frequently asked questions

Will it autofocus with older screw-drive Nikon lenses?

Yes. The D7100 has an in-body AF motor, so AF and AF-D lenses without their own motor will autofocus normally. Nikon's entry-level bodies such as the D3xxx and D5xxx series will not, which makes the D7100 a much better match for used F-mount glass.

What does no low-pass filter mean in practice?

Slightly crisper, more detailed images, at a small increase in the risk of moire patterning on finely repeating textures such as fabric. For most subjects it is a straightforward gain in sharpness.
