At a glance: 70-300mm FX tele-zoom - entry-level screw-drive AF, no ED glass, no VR.

About this lens

The Nikon AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6G is an entry-level screw-drive telephoto zoom for full-frame Nikon DSLRs. A simple, light, affordable option for occasional telephoto work - no ED glass, no VR, and uses Nikon's earlier screw-drive AF which requires a body with built-in autofocus motor.

Build & handling

Autofocus Screw-drive AF (requires body with AF motor)
Image stabilisation No
Minimum focus distance 1.5m
Filter thread 62mm
Weight 425g
Construction 7 elements in 5 groups, plastic mount

Works with

  • Nikon F-mount full-frame DSLRs with built-in AF motor (D750, D780, D810, D850 and older pro bodies)
  • Nikon F-mount APS-C DSLRs with AF motor (D500, D7x00 series - acts as ~105-450mm equivalent)
  • Nikon Z mirrorless via FTZ/FTZ II adapter - manual focus only (adapter does not drive screw-AF)
  • Not autofocusing on entry-level Nikons (D3xxx / D5xxx) - no in-body AF motor

Best for

The cheapest of Nikon's 70-300mm zooms - useful reach for occasional sports, wildlife or events, but with real compromises versus the ED or VR variants. No stabilisation, so a faster shutter speed or tripod is essential at 300mm.

Frequently asked questions

Will it autofocus on entry-level Nikon DSLRs (D3xxx / D5xxx)?

No. This is a screw-drive AF lens and entry-level Nikon DSLRs don't have a built-in autofocus motor, so you'd be stuck with manual focus. For AF on those bodies you'd need an AF-S, AF-P or AF-I lens.

Does this lens have image stabilisation?

No. The G (non-ED, non-VR) 70-300mm predates Nikon's stabilised telezoom consumer lineup. Stabilised alternatives include the AF-S 70-300mm VR and the AF-P 70-300mm VR.
