About this camera

Announced in 2016, the Leica X-U (Typ 113) is a rugged large-sensor compact that pairs a 16.2MP APS-C sensor with a fixed Summilux lens. Its standout feature is being fully waterproof to 15m and shockproof, bringing Leica image quality to underwater and all-weather adventure shooting.

Best for

The X-U is aimed at photographers who want genuine large-sensor quality in places most cameras cannot go - diving, watersports, beaches, deserts and rough outdoor use. Sealed against water to 15m, shockproof and dustproof, it swaps the usual small compact-camera sensor for an APS-C chip and a bright fixed Summilux lens. That fixed 35mm-equivalent lens does not interchange, and there is no electronic viewfinder, so all composition is done on the rear LCD - trade-offs made for ruggedness and simplicity rather than versatility.

Frequently asked questions

How deep is the X-U waterproof?

It is fully waterproof and submersible to a depth of 15m (about 49 feet), so it can be used for snorkelling and shallow diving without a separate housing.

Can you change the lens?

No. The X-U has a fixed Summilux 23mm f/1.7 lens (35mm equivalent) that cannot be removed or swapped - the sealed design is part of what keeps it waterproof.

Does it have a viewfinder?

No, there is no electronic or optical viewfinder. You compose and review images using the fixed 3-inch rear LCD.

How tough is it besides being waterproof?

As well as being waterproof to 15m, it is shockproof against drops from around 1.2m and dustproof, making it suited to demanding outdoor and adventure conditions.
