About this lens
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM is the original 1995 version of Canon's professional telephoto zoom - the non-stabilised, non-IS forerunner of the IS series. It pairs the same constant f/2.8 aperture and L-series weather-sealed build with ring USM autofocus, without the image stabilisation that later versions added.

Best for
The most affordable route into Canon's professional 70-200mm f/2.8 range. Optically strong and built to full L-series standard, it suits work where you shoot at higher shutter speeds anyway - daylight sport, outdoor portraits, weddings on a monopod. If you often shoot handheld in low light, one of the IS versions is worth the extra outlay; if not, this delivers the same aperture and build for considerably less.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the IS versions?
This is the original 1995 lens and has no image stabilisation. The optics and constant f/2.8 aperture are comparable, but the IS, IS II and IS III versions add stabilisation worth roughly 3-4 stops handheld, plus optical refinements. This version is the most affordable of the family used.
Is it still worth buying without IS?
It depends how you shoot. On a monopod or tripod, or in good light at fast shutter speeds, stabilisation adds little. For handheld work in dim conditions it makes a real difference.
