The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is the second generation of Canon's flagship professional telephoto zoom, released in 2010. It brought a redesigned optical formula with improved sharpness wide open, upgraded 4-stop stabilisation, and fluorite plus Super UD glass elements.

Best for
The reference 70-200mm f/2.8 for sports, events, portraits, and low-light work. Unchallenged as an EF-mount professional lens for most of the 2010s and still widely used. Compatible with Canon EF-mount full-frame and APS-C DSLRs, and with RF-mount mirrorless bodies via the EF-EOS R adapter. Superseded by the Mark III in 2018.

Is the IS II version worth it over the original 70-200mm f/2.8L IS?
Yes. The 2010 Mark II brought a redesigned optical formula with fluorite elements, noticeably better sharpness wide open at 200mm, closer minimum focus, and upgraded stabilisation with two modes. It is the version most professionals settled on.
Will it work on a Canon RF mirrorless body?
Yes, via Canon's EF-EOS R adapter, with full autofocus, image stabilisation and aperture control retained.
Can I use teleconverters with it?
Yes. It is compatible with Canon's EF 1.4x and 2x Extenders, giving 280mm at f/4 or 400mm at f/5.6 respectively. Autofocus is retained on bodies that support the resulting maximum aperture.
Does this lens have image stabilisation?
Yes — up to 4 stops, two modes.
Will it work on Canon RF mirrorless bodies?
Yes, via the Canon EF-EOS R adapter. Autofocus and IS are preserved, and the lens functions normally on R, R5, R6, R7, R8, R50 and other RF bodies.
