At a glance: Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM - stabilised general-purpose walkaround zoom for EF-mount DSLRs.
About this lens
The Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is a stabilised general-purpose zoom introduced in 1998, and for many years Canon's standard full-frame kit lens. Its near-5x range covers wide-angle through short telephoto, and it was one of the earlier consumer zooms to include image stabilisation and ring USM autofocus.

Best for
A practical, affordable walkaround zoom for Canon EF DSLRs - one lens covering most everyday shooting from group shots to portraits. On full frame it is a true 28-135mm; on APS-C the crop makes it a 45-216mm, which is long at the wide end for interiors but excellent for general outdoor use. A sensible first zoom or a light travel option.
Frequently asked questions
Is it a good match for an APS-C body?
It works well, but the 1.6x crop makes it a 45-216mm equivalent, so it is not especially wide. For APS-C, a lens starting at 17-18mm gives a more useful wide end; this is better suited to full-frame bodies or to telephoto-leaning use.
How effective is the stabilisation?
This is an early IS implementation offering roughly two stops - helpful, but less capable than modern 4-5 stop systems.
