About this lens
The Nikon AF 85mm f/1.4D is a legendary portrait prime, produced from 1995 to 2012 as the successor to the AI-S version. Often called "the cream machine" for its distinctive rendering, it was the go-to portrait lens for a generation of Nikon photographers and remains highly sought-after on the used market.

Works with
- Nikon F-mount full-frame (FX) DSLRs with in-body AF motor (D7xxx, D8xx, pro bodies)

- Nikon DX (APS-C) DSLRs (128mm equivalent - a long portrait lens); entry-level DX bodies will be manual-focus only
Best for
Prized for its shallow depth of field and creamy out-of-focus background rendering — the hallmark of a fast portrait prime. Wide open at f/1.4 it is soft and characterful; stopped down to f/2 or f/2.8 it becomes clinically sharp. Requires a Nikon DSLR with an in-body focus motor (D7xxx, D8xx or pro body); on entry-level Nikons it can be used in manual focus only.
Frequently asked questions
Will it autofocus on entry-level Nikon DSLRs (D3xxx / D5xxx)?
No. This lens uses screw-drive autofocus and requires a Nikon body with an in-body AF motor (D7xxx, D8xx or pro bodies, or older film SLRs). On entry-level bodies it can be used in manual focus only.
